‘Twas a hot day in Seattle when my search for local coffee shops somehow led to this South African tea house. Well, it wasn’t quite as serendipitous as that. My dad and I had just hiked all the way up to Kerry Park from the bottom of Queen Anne “Hill” (more like mountain), where we parked our car, and I was in dire need of a place to recuperate and refresh. (I don’t know why we didn’t just drive all the way up to Kerry Park; I threw my hands up in the air when I saw that there was a main road that led right up to it.)
Merry Christmas from Palos Verdes!
Wishing you a Merry Christmas from my hometown of Palos Verdes! I only have beautiful memories here, probably because I only stayed here until the end of fourth grade, and the life of a fourth grader isn’t all that tough, but nevertheless, coming back here always sweeps me up into an ocean of good vibes, and I hope you are finding your holidays filled with that too!
Thanksgiving 2015
This year I’m spending Thanksgiving break with Georgina, Ami, Grace, and Victoria at Georgina’s house in New York City. We’ve been anticipating this trip ever since fall break. And finally, after turning in my group paper for Cities and going to Chinese class and presenting my oral, it’s here!
Our bags packed, we hustle over to catch the SEPTA to get to the Megabus stop at 30th Street Station. It’s the day before Thanksgiving, so public transportation is crazy. We walk all the way down to the first car and grab whatever empty seat we can find, which unfortunately means we don’t get to sit together. On the bright side, #1 we don’t get ticketed because the ticketer can’t keep track of everyone, and #2 the stranger next to me strikes up some lovely conversation. When we split ways at 30th Street Station, we bid each other happy holidays. I think that was the first time I’ve talked to a stranger on public transportation about something other than directions. Strangers who initiate conversation make me so happy, because I don’t have the courage to do it myself, but it’s something I rather do enjoy.
Beijing, summer of 2015
My best friend Sheena and I joked that being apart for college wouldn’t be difficult for us because it wouldn’t be any different from high school. We’ve never had any classes together since 7th grade, and then throughout my upperclassman years of high school, I was mostly holed up in the art studio, either napping or actually working on projects I needed to be working on (what a foreign concept!).
We don’t have the same dynamic as the typical pair of best friends, and it works. On the wonderful occasions we finally see each other again, we fall right back into conversation as if no time has passed.
Back home in Beijing with no responsibilities (no classes, no internship, no job) for a good part of summer, I’ve mostly been hanging out at Starbucks with Sheena and Ray, and cramming in photography with Kathleen and Kristy, who are sharing their photos on the blog today in this collab!
颐和园
The last time I was here was for my 5th grade field trip. Oh how I miss the days when field trips were part of our curriculum! As we were there for school, naturally, we were assigned a project, which was to make a scrapbook that included various components detailed in our rubric (scavenger hunt style).
So today we have a very special guest contributor to the blog, 10-year-old-Audrey…
古北水镇
I must have visited the Great Wall of China at least ten times the first year I moved to Beijing. Dad had a lot of visitors and we’d always take them there. Then one day I thought enough was enough, I will not be dragged to the Great Wall of China even one more time. And true to my word, I stopped going.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been a tourist in my own country. But while I’ve been away for college for the past year, I’ve come to miss all the things about China I took for granted. So this summer when Dad asked if I wanted to go to 古北水镇 (gǔ běi shuǐ zhèn, Gubei Water Town), I said yes!
And even though the cause for this occasion was Ken’s birthday, the family decided to leave him at home for this trip, which was really just everything Ken could ask for. He’s not really about sight-seeing unless the sight is a monitor with a video game console attached.
