In Croswald, the only thing more powerful than dark magic is one secret… For sixteen years Ivy Lovely has been hidden behind an enchanted boundary that separates the mundane from the magical. When Ivy crosses the border, her powers awaken. Curiosity leads her crashing through a series of adventures at the Halls of Ivy, a school where students learn to master their magical blood and the power of Croswald’s mysterious gems. When Ivy’s magic––and her life––is threatened by the Dark Queen, she scrambles to unearth her history and save Croswald before the truth is swept away forever.
I chose this book because…
The idea of magical boundaries reminds me of the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter, which I’m always down for. Plus, Hogwarts comes to mind when imagining Halls of Ivy. And I know that this is not what they mean when they mention mastering magical blood, but my mind went to Avatar blood bending hahah. I’m ready to be swept away to a fantastical world!
Upon reading it…
Have you reread the Harry Potter series multiple times and are you searching for another magical school to dive into? Complete with its own magical terminology, The Crowns of Croswald might be just the book for you. This novel is middle grade, and can also be a fun, light read for older readers in high school, college (me), and above!
From the beginning, it was obvious that Ivy was someone important to Croswald, and you could probably jump to conclusions and get it right, but it’s the why and how of everything that will get you flipping to the end anyway. The plot is a little predictable, but what makes this novel such a treat is the world building. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in another magical world, forget the plane ticket and check out this book!
Can I go to a magical boarding school already??
★★★★☆
More strangeness, she mused. She was getting used to everything being odd, all the time.
