I made a selective list of touristy things I wanted to do in Paris, and one of the top items on the list was getting a box of six macarons from Ladurée. After Mom had her fun on the Champs-Élysées at Louis Vuitton and Hermès, it was my turn to have fun at Ladurée. We entered through the bakery rather than the restaurant, got our desserts to-go, and enjoyed them by the French windows of our Airbnb, free of tourists (except for ourselves) and softly glowing in natural lighting (much friendlier for my photos than Ladurées dim lighting). To complete the ambience, I played Spotify’s coffee table jazz playlist.
coffee macaron – rose macaron – raspberry macaron – pistachio macaron – salted caramel macaron – lavender macaron – vanilla flan – fraisier – harmonie – apple turnover – chocolate croissant
It felt like a scene from a romantic movie. Everything was so perfect. Of course, it didn’t hurt that we had a whole array of dainty pastries, that we were in an incredibly hip Airbnb, and that the Eiffel Tower was just out the window. But despite all the big, wonderful things, it felt like a truly intimate moment. It was the small things that made this moment.
It was having a small coffee table that made any spread, no matter how small, feel big. It was sitting on the ground close together, because we were excited about what was in front of us. Perhaps it was missing a flickering a candle, but the hot tea warmed our souls, and the last streaks of daylight warmed our skin. It was the energy sneaking in through the windows from outside. It was soft music, full hearts.
We could have been any place. But we were in Paris.
(But I do have to say… those French windows tho.)
