As soon as she started playing, before she even sang her first word, there was a sense of serenity. There’s a beauty and grace that exudes from her, her manner, her music. This concert was originally scheduled for November, but she lost her voice; I’m so glad she came back to Philly to finish off her North American tour!
My favourite songs from her Shore EP are “Sound” and “Digital Ocean.” One of her really popular covers is of “Crazy” (also on Youtube here), which is the song I discovered her through, and which was used in the Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack! Other covers by her that I also love are “La Vie En Rose” and “Telegraph Ave/Sober” (also on Youtube here). And “Christmas Time Is Here” (also on Youtube here ft. her dog and cosy lighting) heh…
At this concert, we got to hear some unreleased songs as well. One of these was “Badly Programmed.” Yes, Stephanie and I did give each other looks at this potential computer-science-related pun. Daniela told us a little story about how this song came to be. It was when she left a party with a feeling of social anxiety that stayed with her. I think many of us can relate to leaving some place physically, but having that mental stuff stick, unable to stop replaying the things we’ve said, and thinking too much.
*some fun edits*
The concert was hosted at World Cafe Live, and it was the first time I had been to the venue! I went with Stephanie, who was there just last week for Us the Duo’s concert. Last time she was in the downstairs venue, but this time we were in the upstairs venue. I don’t know about downstairs, but upstairs had a nice set-up with a bar on one side, tables and seating on the other side, a low stage at the front, and standing room in front of it. It was a very intimate setting. It wasn’t like the previous concerts I’ve been to at Philly’s Union Transfer, where there would be flashing lights and heavy beats reverberating through my body.
Stephanie and I stood right at the front of the stage. Can you spy us on Daniela’s Instagram (last photo)? Stephanie is on Daniela’s left (so looking at the photograph, Stephanie is on the right), and I’m right behind Daniela! I should have booped her head for the photo.
